The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has consulted publicly on a rule change proposal to regulate conditional discounting practices by energy retailers. The proposal is to restrict the level of conditional discounts to the “reasonable cost savings” that a retailer expects to make.
We support the intent of the rule change proposal to support consumer choice by helping them to better understand energy offers and to reduce the risk to vulnerable consumers of higher than anticipated bills. Ultimately it is up to the sector to meet consumers where they are and structure energy services to deliver affordable outcomes.
