Electrification Accelerator: A community-led approach to making electrification faster, fairer and better

Why electrify?

Electrification can help households cut energy bills and reduce emissions, but many Australians still face barriers to enjoying these benefits. Without targeted support, the shift to cleaner, more efficient homes risks widening the gap between energy “haves and have-nots”. Modelling conducted by Rewiring Australia in 2025 shows that a typical household running gas appliances and petrol vehicles spends around $9,200 a year on energy and fuel, compared to just $1,300 for an equivalent fully electrified home with solar and battery.

The project

ECA funded Rewiring Australia to develop the Electrification Accelerator; a scalable, community-led models that make electrification faster, fairer and more inclusive. Rewiring Australia worked with community groups, councils, industry, researchers and government to identify practical barriers, test project ideas and progress the most promising into delivery pathways.  

The impact

The project has turned community interest in electrification into practical pathways for action. Six projects progressed through key funding or delivery decisions, including the Go Electric Canberra pilot, strata EV charging work and a partnership with Google to develop an AI-powered Home Electrification Advisory Tool. Rewiring Australia also produced practical resources, including the Community Electrification Handbook, and policy recommendations that give communities, councils and decision-makers clearer models for supporting households. The handbook includes everything Rewiring has learnt from helping community groups electrify their neighbourhoods, in one spot.
