Submission to the ACT Government’s Future Appliance Regulations to Support the Gas Transition Discussion Paper

Effective regulation is needed for an equitable, consumer-focused transition away from gas.

We welcome the ACT Government’s leadership in providing clear policy direction for the transition away from gas, including its commitment to phase out gas use by 2045. 

Clear government direction gives consumers, industry and energy-system planners greater certainty to make informed long-term decisions and reduces the risk that the costs of an unmanaged transition fall disproportionately on those least able to electrify.

Appliance regulation is an important next step to support this transition. We support stronger regulation of gas appliances, as part of a coordinated framework that gives consumers adequate information, time and support to electrify.
