Submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission on Protecting Customers Affected by Family Violence

Energy Consumers Australia

We appreciate the opportunity to provide comment to the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) on the important draft determination and rules on Protecting Customers Affected by Family Violence.

Protecting customers affected by family violence is the responsibility of us all. That’s why we commend the AEMC for strengthening the rule change proposed by Red Energy and Lumo Energy. However, we believe that the proposal should be strengthened further to further safeguard and protect customers affected by family violence.

The improvements which we believe would be beneficial include strengthening the review process, engaging and embedding the learnings of lived experience of affected customers, ensuring that family violence protections remain fit-for-purpose through periodic review, and providing adequate support for staff.

We commend the AEMC’s important work on this rule change, while also acknowledging it is not a job well done, but rather a job well started.
