Submission to the City of Sydney on proposed planning controls for the electrification of new development

We welcome the City of Sydney’s proposal to require all-electric systems in new residential accommodation and larger commercial buildings.

Electrification means healthier, more comfortable homes and workplaces, lower running costs for households and small businesses, and protection from the risks of outdated gas infrastructure.

City of Sydney's draft planning controls are a timely and practical way to ensure new buildings are designed for a clean energy future from day one.

In our submission, we support the proposed reforms and suggest ways to ensure they deliver the greatest benefit for the community. This includes looking at opportunities to introduce the rules sooner, expanding them to cover more building types and major renovations, and ensuring exemptions do not inadvertently increase the risk of long-term gas lock-in.

With these improvements, City of Sydney can help ensure no one is left behind in the energy transition.
