We support the intent of the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC)'s rule change and draft determination for assisting hardship customers.

We generally support the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC)'s draft determination to assist hardship customers, particularly:

  • Ensuring all hardship customers are paying no more than their retailer’s best offer
  • Improved reporting to the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) on retailer offers to hardship customers, as this can improve transparency into the diversity of prices and experiences available
  • The AEMC's agreement with many of the recommendations in our submission to the Consultation paper, including enabling hardship customers to pay less through either a credit or a better offer, and requiring retailers to check and provide the benefits of a better offer at least once every 100 days
