Too many consumers are not on their retailer’s best offer and are paying more for energy than they should.
Our submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) calls for stronger action to help ensure consumers on older offers are not subject to this ‘loyalty tax’.
We support the proposal to improve the visibility of better offers, but this change alone won't help the many people who face real barriers to switching. Energy plans remain complex and difficult to compare and switching processes can be time-consuming or unclear.
We urge that the AEMC go further by requiring energy retailers to make switching simpler, more accessible and more effective, and to consider stronger protections for people who face greater barriers to switching.
Consumers who are unable or unwilling to engage in the market should still be protected from paying unnecessarily higher prices.
