Response to today’s Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council announcements

Please quote Energy Consumers Australia CEO Brendan French:

“Energy Consumers Australia congratulates Energy Ministers on the commitments made today to support Australian households and small businesses.

“We unequivocally support the First Nations Clean Energy Strategy’s objectives, including giving First Nations people a say in renewable energy policies and programs. Ensuring Indigenous people can participate in and benefit from the clean energy transformation – ensuring access for reliable clean energy for all Australians – is absolutely vital.

“Energy Consumers Australia also applauds the work of the First Nations Clean Energy and Climate Change Advisory Committee, First Nations communities and organisations including the First Nations Clean Energy Network and other stakeholders in developing the Strategy. We are eager to support the Strategy going forward.

“We welcome the pledge to bring options for consumer regulatory framework reform to the next Energy Ministers’ meeting and to progress the National Consumer Energy Resources Roadmap. These both have important roles in ensuring consumer confidence in energy services and technologies.

“More needs to be done though to help people realise the benefits of Consumer Energy Resources (CER). Our latest Consumer Energy Report Card survey shows Australians don’t feel they have the information they need about CER, such as household batteries and electric vehicles (EVs). More innovative solutions, such as one-stop-shops to help households and small businesses access information about energy and supports are sorely needed.”

Energy Consumers Australia looks forward to working with Ministers to progress these and other essential reforms in 2025.”
